Briefing 2023

Initial situation

Tulln is Austria's garden city. In the future, it also wants to develop into a digital city and thus become a "Green Smart City". This goal should be achieved with a variety of projects and ideas.

Beside the development and commissioning of its own LoRa-Wan network for simple data transmission from sensors used, the path towards climate neutrality by the year 2040 was also taken. With the founding of the Tullnerfeld Energy Community, one of the first energy communities in Austria went into operation in Tulln in 2022. With Tulln Energie as a 100% subsidiary of the municipality, regional green electricity is produced by one of the largest city PV plants.

With the help of the following three Industry meets Makers challenges, we want to continue our development and find innovative solutions for current issues.

Challenge 1: Nibelungenplatz - Tulln's digital garden

We want to continue to innovate our Nibelungenplatz and make it a special feel-good place. With the help of sensor technology, creative data evaluation and new concepts we want to gain new insights that contribute to CO2 reduction and environmental protection and also offer special experiences for the people who spend time on the square.

A more detailed specification of the challenge will follow shortly.

Challenge 2: Energy Community Tullnerfeld - Use of smart meter data

We invite the IMM community to use the smart meter data of our Energy Community Tullnerfeld to develop creative new services and apps and to gain new insights that will help us to reduce and optimise our energy consumption.

A more detailed specification of the challenge will follow shortly.

Challenge 3: Tulln as a digital city - innovative ideas and effective Projects

We are looking for innovative ideas and effective project concepts that will help us to develop Tulln into a forward-looking digital city. The ideas and concepts can relate to all areas of life - from mobility, living, learning and working to leisure, tourism, entertainment and urban services.

A more detailed specification of the challenge will follow shortly.

Perspectives

We are looking for creative minds and innovative makers who would like to develop innovative solutions for these challenges together with us. Our urban developers are happy to provide advice and support throughout the process.

If forward-looking approaches emerge during the #IMM2023 programme, we can also imagine transforming them into concrete implementation projects afterwards.

About us

the City of Tulln

The Lower Austrian district capital Tulln is a harmonious small town with a lot of quality of life and leisure time and at the same time a dynamic hub for the entire region. The city has 16,556 inhabitants and is located in the Tullnerfeld, which is bordered by the Vienna Woods to the south and the Wagram to the north. The city area has an extension of 72 km² and spreads out on both sides of the Danube, which flows through the area in a length of about five kilometres.

Tulln is known far beyond the city and state borders as a trade fair and university city as well as a vibrant business location with a lively city centre, numerous small and medium-sized businesses and renowned industrial and commercial enterprises. The Tulln Technopol campus is home to high-quality research, business and education in the field of biotechnology - and since 2022 also the "House of Digitalisation".

Lively green landscapes along the Danube and magnificent green and garden spaces throughout the city are both oases of tranquillity and sporting paradises - for example the near-natural Aubad and the flowering Donaulände. GARTEN TULLN, Europe's first ecological garden show, presents itself with over 70 show gardens. Culture lovers get their money's worth with a wide range of offers - especially around Tulln's most famous son Egon Schiele.

Tulln's history goes back a long way: during the Roman Empire, Tulln served as the "Comagena" equestrian fort to secure the Norse Limes directly on the Danube. Finds from the founding period of Tulln can be admired in the Roman Museum. The Romanesque charnel house (around 1240), the Minorite Church (1732-39), the town tower (16th century), numerous Gothic and Baroque buildings and many other sights make Tulln a town full of art and cultural treasures.
