bootcamp Briefing Special 2020

Initial situation

Even though the lock-down during the COVID 19 pandemic is currently behind us, it is important to keep your distance from other people to prevent further cases of infection. With increasing distance (1 m - 1.5 m - 2 m) the risk of infection decreases significantly (see current study Physical distancing, face masks, and eye protection for prevention of COVID-19). In many situations, people need support in keeping their distance, because new rules and old habits often collide with psychological factors (keyword "personal distance"). Especially where many strangers meet to exchange information, simple and effective solutions are needed.

There are a number of digital solutions for keeping distance on the market, which are currently mainly used by companies. However, up to now these are often too unwieldy, not applicable in all social situations, too expensive or simply not effective enough. We would like to change this situation.

Task

We are looking for new ideas, technical as well as concept prototypes, which help to maintain the necessary distance between people with the most comfortable and effective sensory measures, and which are at the same time easy and inexpensive to produce. The approaches can range from a smart key ring, smart lanyards and textiles to intelligent jewellery, for example. Sensory solutions for the perception of the spatial distance between people with an unobtrusive reminder signal of any kind (vibration, light, sound, colour etc.) are desired. Everything is possible (with the exception of an app that collects personal data). We would like to see completely new ideas or fundamental improvements to existing products. For both, insights from psychology can and should be used.

We have already done some research on sensor possibilities which we can discuss during the Virtual Future Tech Bootcamp brainstorming sessions (see e.g. an overview on this page).

Preferred field of application: As support for keeping distance concepts for tourism managers and congress organizers; for galleries, exhibitions and museums; for events like the "Long Night of Museums" or fairs.

Perspectives

We implement the most promising concepts together and test their impact in relevant application areas, such as the tourism, trade fair and congress sector, in galleries and exhibitions or at events. An accompanying research project will help to methodically record the effectiveness and acceptance in order to be able to derive assistance for the respective organizers and organizers.
